GALWAY’S OPEN House architectural festival this weekend will feature “talking tours” starting from the Spanish Arch. Three separate tours tomorrow will explore the city’s spiritual spaces, waterways and “iconic” modern buildings.
The organisers are saying, in the most diplomatic way, that Galway’s festival, which started yesterday, will be more creative than the corresponding event in Dublin last weekend.
“Groovy” is how Open House Galway chairman Patrick McCabe described the events, which include jazz, music and imagery.
The Italian ambassador to Ireland, Valerio Augusto Astraldi, will open two exhibitions today on the work of 16th-century Italian architect Andrea Palladio and on the RIAI Irish Architecture Awards. Both exhibitions will run at the Galway harbour Centre Pier building until October 20th.
“Enlighten us, but make it quick” is the theme of the Ignite Architecture cabaret event, which takes place tomorrow evening.
The design skills of younger residents will also be harnessed at two children’s architectural workshops at Galway City Museum.
On Sunday, a tour from the Spanish Arch will focus on the city’s medieval heritage, while a tour starting from the NUI Galway quadrangle will explore the university campus.
There will also be three visits to Mutton Island Lighthouse.
