The head of the Arab League has condemned Israel's attempt to kill a senior Hamas leader as an attempt to sink the US-backed "road map" peace plan.

"Israel is trying to foil any move towards achieving peace. This attack is not only a violation of the road map but a threat to the peace process," Mr Amr Moussa told reporters in Bahrain.

"Continued Israeli attacks will lead to retaliation in kind".

Hamas leader Mr Abdel-Aziz al-Rantissi, who has publicly rejected calls to cease attacks on Israelis under the terms of the road map, was wounded in the helicopter attack in Gaza this morning.
