Kuala Lumpur - Malaysian police yesterday moved to detain at least 10 supporters of the former finance minister, Mr Anwar Ibrahim, in a crackdown against the opposition on the anniversary of his arrest.
Police detained Mr Azmin Ali, Mr Anwar's former private secretary, and a former student activist, Mr Hishamudin Rais.
The authorities planned to detain eight other people who took part in a demonstration on Sunday by about 10,000 Anwar supporters, local reports said, adding that at least five of them would be held for a week. It was not clear how long the others would be held.
