Kuala Lumpur - The dismissed Malaysian deputy prime minister, Mr Anwar Ibrahim (51), has filed an eleventh-hour appeal for bail as his supporters called for fresh protests this weekend in defiance of police warnings. Supporters meanwhile sent out notices urging people to gather for a peaceful demonstration this afternoon for what has become a customary but illegal weekly protest. Mr Anwar was sacked as deputy prime minister and finance minister on September 2nd by the Prime Minister, Mr Mahathir Mohamad. He was charged with corruption and sexual misconduct, which he dismisses as politically motivated.
