Kuala Lumpur - Six remaining charges of corruption and sodomy against the ousted Malaysian deputy premier Mr Anwar Ibrahim will be heard in December and January, press reports said yesterday. The Attorney General, Mr Mohtar Abdullah, said prosecutors had applied to set dates for the hearings.
Ten charges - five of corruption and five for sodomy - have been laid against Mr Anwar, who faces trial on the first four corruption charges next month.
Mr Anwar was sacked from government on September 2nd, and was arrested on September 20th. When he appeared in court on September 29th he had with a black eye and bruised arm.
President Joseph Estrada of the Philippines and President B. J. Habibie of Indonesia, who met earlier this week, may make a formal appeal to the Prime Minister, Mr Mahathir Mohamad, that Mr Anwar be placed under house arrest instead of jail. The two leaders are friends of Mr Anwar.
