An Antrim midwife who spent two years working to improve maternity healthcare in Africa has been named Volunteer of the Year in the awards scheme organised by Volunteer Ireland.
Jacqueline McAuley lectured, mentored and supervised midwifery students in Ethiopia.
Ten other volunteers also received awards at a ceremony in Dublin last night.
They were: Jacqueline O’Driscoll, Limerick Feral Cats; Shay Gillespie, Foyle Gay Pride Festival; Lorraine O’Neill, Cystic Fibrosis Cavan; Celestine Fennessy, Irish Girl Guides; Sharon Parker-Byrne, New Oak Estate, Carlow; Tomás Connaugh-ton, Civil Defence Galway; Betty Wall, Variety Ireland, Dublin; Orla O’Donnell, Outreach Moldova, Co Kildare; Sr Helen Culhane, Children’s Grief Project, Limerick, and Jim Ryan, Claremorris Athletic Club.
