The Irish Anti-War Movement (IAWM) said today it plans to disrupt access to Shannon Airport next Saturday in protest at its use by planes carrying US troops.
The IAWM says the rally will attract protesters from across the country in a "non-violent protest beginning at 2 p.m." It has advised passengers to seek alternative travel arrangements or arrive early for flights.
"It gives us no pleasure to inconvenience ordinary air-travellers and workers," said IAWM chairperson, Mr Richard Boyd Barrett.
"But the Government has ensured there is no such thing as 'business as usual' at the airport by allowing it to be used as a military base, in support of brutal wars and occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan."
The IAWM says tens of thousands of US troops have passed through Shannon since US President George W Bush said the Iraq war was over at the beginning of May.
Mr Boyd Barrett added: "Hundreds of the American soldiers who have stopped off at Shannon have gone on to give their lives or limbs in the cause of making Iraq safe for the oil men who run the Bush administration, and for their other corporate cronies."
Protesters are expected to blockade Shannon Airport in a sit-down protest.
