Hundreds of anti-bin charges protesters gathered outside city hall in Dublin tonight to demand the release of Socialist TD Mr Joe Higgins and Cllr Clare Daly.

The protest coincides with a meeting of the city council. Mr Higgins and Cllr Daly were jailed almost three weeks ago for defying High Court injunctions prohibiting anti-bin charges blockades.

Meanwhile, the Waterford and Galway trades councils are to send delegations to Dublin for next Saturday's union march against the bin charges, it has emerged.

The development is a boost to the Technical Engineering and Electrical Union's (TEEU) campaign to gain wider union support for the campaign.
