The Equality Authority and Age Action Ireland have set up a freephone number in an attempt to combat age discrimination.
They plan to present the information collected from the public to the Government as part of the International Day on Aging on October 1st.

"Ageism is all prevalent in our society and is often unacknowledged even to the point where the exclusion of older people is deemed normal. This must change and ageism needs to be clearly identified as a problem in our society," said Mr Niall Crowley, CEO of the Equality Authority.
Age Action Ireland believes that at present eight per cent of all cases under the seen under the Employment Equality Act are on age grounds.
"In our earlier phone-in’s one of the major findings was that most older people did not complain about discrimination, often because they did not know how or where to complain," said Mr Crowley. "Now people have the right to complain to the Equality Authority and to the Office of the Director of Equality Investigations."
"This phone in is a modest attempt to achieve this general aim by giving people an opportunity to tell their story or their experience of discrimination to people who are keen to listen. We hope it will help the individuals concerned and that the results will be used to highlight the nature of discrimination."
The free phone number is 1800 317 417
