Dublin - Amnesty International is holding a vigil outside the British embassy in Dublin at lunchtime today in the last of a series of vigils on East Timor outside the embassies of the permanent members of the UN Security Council, Patrick Comerford reports. "We are deeply concerned for the fate of several thousand people in East and West Timor at the hands of the militias and Indonesian army and their desperate need of humanitarian assistance," said Ms Mary Lawlor, director of Amnesty's Irish section.
"Amnesty International is seeking assurances that the East Timorese who fled were forcibly removed from there will be allowed to return to East Timor."
In the past week, Amnesty has staged vigils outside the US, French, Chinese and Russian embassies.
