Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is delaying the release of its Clawhammer microprocessors for desktop computers.

The chips will be the first to process data in 64-bit chunks rather than the standard 32 bits processed today on desktop and notebook computers.

The company had planned to release the chip before the end of this year, with computers on store shelves by the first quarter of 2003.

But it will release the chips to manufacturers in the first quarter, and the first systems are now expected in the second quarter.

The company says the change of plan was made to make room for an upgrade to its existing 32-bit Athlon range.
