The crew of an ambulance were attacked by a stone-throwing mob in Poleglass on the outskirts of west Belfast yesterday evening.

They were responding to an emergency call-out when they were surrounded by a crowd of about 20 people at Bell
Steel Road, Dunmurry.

More than £500 of damage was caused to the ambulance, which had to be removed from service.

The crew had to protect their patient while waiting for police to arrive. Two boys aged 13 and 14 were arrested.

The ambulance had been called to treat a 15-year-old girl who had collapsed near St Kieran's primary school. She was
able to go home to her family.

When police arrived, the crowd ran off but officers detained the two boys. They were later released pending further enquiries.
