Dublin - Colombia's Amazonian Consolidation Network (COAMA), under the direction of a UCD graduate, Mr Martin von Hildebrand, has won an alternative Nobel Prize for its work with the indigenous peoples of the Amazon rain forest, Seamus Martin reports.
Mr von Hildebrand, head of Colombia's Ministry of Indigenous Affairs, is a brother-in-law of the late writer and broadcaster, Mr Breandan O hEithir. The prize, donated by the Right Livelihood Awards Foundation (RLAF), is presented annually by the Swedish parliament on the day before the presentation of the Nobel awards.
