GARDAI in Drogheda have confirmed they are investigating 13 complaints made during the past three weeks by men who allege they were sexually abused by a former consultant at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, when they were young teenagers.

These complaints are in addition to 28 files already with the Director of Public Prosecutions and awaiting a decision on whether or not to prosecute. All incidents are alleged to have occurred either in the hospital or in the consultant's surgery in the mid 1970s.

The first complaint was made nearly two years ago and some complainants recently criticised the decision by the Irish Medical Council to postpone its inquiry into the allegations until after the DPP's decision.
