A FILE is to be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions in connection with the theft of up to €1.5 million worth of beer, alcopops and soft drinks from a drinks wholesalers on the outskirts of Cork city.

An investigation was launched last September after an internal audit showed up huge shortfalls in stock.

Detectives believe that hundreds of crates, including slabs of Heineken cans, were taken over a period of a year or more from a warehouse belonging to Nash Beverages at Little Island.

The alcohol stolen from the plant includes brands such as Guinness, Bulmers and Budweiser. Large consignments of soft drinks were also taken along with alcopops.

It is believed the drink was possibly stolen to order. Gardaí have questioned a number of people.
