The global airlines body IATA said today it was calling an emergency meeting of security chiefs of its 276 member carriers, probably for early next week.

It would review procedures to prevent hijacks and other terrorist acts following the devastating attacks on key US buildings yesterday, in which airliners were used as flying bombs, an International Air Transport Association (IATA) spokesman said.
IATA Director-General Mr Pierre Jeanniot called the meeting of the International Air Transport Association's Security Committee, which was to convene in Montreal in conjunction with the UN International Civil Aviation Organisation.
A statement from Mr Jeanniot, a former Air Canada chief, said the organisation was "shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic events....in the United States."
IATA said the Security Committee - normally around 30 people but to be expanded to accommodate representatives of all member airlines - would review and propose any additional security procedures which may be necessary, and look at implementing best practices already available.
