The Taoiseach will stress the Government's commitment to the cause of the undocumented Irish in America when he joins the annual St Patrick's exodus of politicians on a visit to the United States today ahead of the traditionial St Patrick's Day ceremonies at the White House tomorrow.

Mr Ahern's visit will begin in Scranton, Pennsylvania later this evening when he will meet members of Congress and address an event organised by the Friendly Sons of St Patrick.

In an area that is 30 per cent Irish, the Taoiseach is expected to pay tribute to the role of Irish America in American society and in supporting peace and prosperity back home in Ireland. He will stress the Government's commitment to the cause of the undocumented Irish in America.

He is expected to meet with President George W Bush and US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi as well as other key political and business figures in Washington tomorrow.

Meanwhile most of the cabinet are overseas for the annual exodus. Tanaiste Brian Cowen is in Malaysia representing the country while Enterprise Minister Micheal Martin is in Italy.

Transport Minister Noel Dempsey travelled to Australia and European Affairs Minister Dick Roche was China bound. Foreign Affairs Minister Dermot Ahern is in Argentina while Health Minister Mary Harney is attending Irish-themed events in Prague.

Environment Minister John Gormley is in London while Education Minister Mary Hanafin will be officiating at the St Patrick's Day Parade in New York.
