The trade union Siptu has called off a planned work stoppage at Aer Lingus scheduled for next Monday.
The move followed the provision of clarification on proposals for a new talks process for dealing with a €750 million deficit in the pension scheme which covers workers at the airline as well as at the Dublin Airport Authority.
The new proposals were drawn up jointly by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions and the employer's group Ibec.
At a meeting on Monday, Siptu shop stewards at Aer Lingus had declined to withdraw strike notice. They were opposed to moves by the company to seek new productivity measures from staff to offset investment in the pension scheme.
Siptu shop stewards met again at lunchtime today to consider the clarifications provided yesterday by Congress and Ibec.
Speaking after a meeting of union representatives at the airport, Siptu sector organiser, Dermot O'Loughlin, said its industrial action committee had discussed clarifications and assurances obtained from Ictu and Ibec on their recent mediation proposals.
"On foot of this information the Committee decided by a majority vote that it will be accepting the mediation proposal and has called off industrial action planned for next week. "
However he said the committee was determined that "it will not engage in any resolution to the current crisis in the pension scheme at Aer Lingus and the Dublin Airport Authority that involves our members being forced to accept productivity measures in return for their pension entitlements."
Aer Lingus welcomed the Siptu decision to call off the planned industrial action.
It said it was now proceeding "towards finding an appropriate solution to the pension issues and was immediately re-engaging with the 'technical group' of actuarial and legal advisors and with the Labour Relations Commission."
"We can now confirm that we plan to operate our full schedule of services on Monday 19th November. We apologise to our customers for the uncertainty of recent days."
