A new advocacy group for women who have been traumatised by gynaecological surgical procedures is to be set up by the Irish Patients’ Association. The association has advertised for women concerned about procedures they may have had to contact them.

Spokesman for the association Stephen McMahon said they had been assisting a number of women who had been “traumatised” by their experiences. These women wanted to form their own advocacy and support group with others who were unhappy with their experiences, he said.

Mr McMahon said the women were not those who had undergone unnecessary hysterectomies at the hands of Dr Michael Neary at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda. The new group had “more recent patient experiences”, he said.
