Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams called today for a meeting with Taoiseach Brian Cowen to discuss the outcome of the Lisbon Treaty referendum ahead of this week's EU Commissioners' meeting on Thursday.

Mr Adams called on the Government to seek a protocol protecting Ireland's neutrality and for opt-outs in the areas of expenditure on nuclear power; enhancement of military capability, greater protection for workers'
rights and active promotion of fair trade over free trade

Speaking on RTÉ's This Week programme, Mr Adams said the possibility of the European Union "going ahead" without Ireland was "nonsensical".

He said the Taoiseach needed to tell the EU "that this treaty is finished, that a new treaty is required.”
