Oscar-winning US actor Morgan Freeman was in serious condition in a Memphis, Tennessee, hospital today after being injured in a road accident.
The 71-year-old Freeman was airlifted last night from the accident site in Tallahatchie County in the neighbouring state of Mississippi, where he has a home, to Regional Medical Centre in Tennessee, a hospital spokesman said.
The spokesman said Freeman was in serious condition but gave no details of his injuries.
Police said Freeman's vehicle went off the road and rolled over several times. Police have ruled out alcohol as a factor in the crash.
Both Freeman and a female passenger, identified as Demaris Meyer, were wearing seat belts, but the air bags did not deploy. Ms Meyer's condition is unknown.
Freeman was born in Memphis but spent much of his childhood in Mississippi and has opened a music club in the state.
Freeman won an Oscar in 2005 for his supporting role in Clint Eastwood's boxing drama
Million Dollar Baby. He also earned Oscar nominations for his work in the films
Street Smart, Driving Miss Daisyand
The Shawshank Redemption. He co-stars in the current Batman film,
The Dark Knight.
