Actor Joe Pilkington dies in Galway

The actor and painter, Joe Pilkington, famous for his part as Eamon in RTE's drama, The Riordans, died in Galway yesterday.

The actor and painter, Joe Pilkington, famous for his part as Eamon in RTE's drama, The Riordans, died in Galway yesterday.

Mr Pilkington, who was 58, had retired to Oughterard and in recent years had devoted most of his time to his paintings, most of which he sold privately. Originally from Barna in Co Galway, most of his early acting career was on stage in Dublin before he was cast as Eamon, the Traveller from the west of Ireland, in The Riordans.

After The Riordans, he moved to the west where he was also known for his interest in environmental issues. Mr Pilkington died in Galway's Merlin Park Hospital.
