The controversial 18th green at Southern Hills, criticised by Bernhard Langer among others as "ridiculous", has prompted a notice to all players on the eve of the US Open.
Shots into the heart of the green have been rolling off the front as much as 50 yards away and Langer said: "There's going to be a lot of crazy stuff out there. I like courses that are fair and I don't think that that green is fair. It's pure luck."
Fred Ridley, chairman of the United States Golf Association championship committee, said in the notice: "Based on our observations and the concerns expressed by many of you with respect to the ninth and 18th greens, we wanted to advise you of the actions which will be taken to address those concerns.
"Effective immediately, mower height and irrigation of the greens will be modifield as necessary to prevent, as much as possible, the problem of shots rolling off the front of these greens.
"In doing so, it is our goal to maintain effective speeds and firmness on these greens which as are as fair as possible."
