Health issues affecting prisoners should be brought under the aegis of the health boards, Mr Joe Costello (Labour) said in a debate on the incidence of suicide in Irish society. In the context of the prison system, something drastic needed to be done.
Was there any reason we could not have an induction system on receipt of prisoners into prison which would look into the circumstances in which they had arrived? He said it could counsel them at the very beginning or have someone there who could determine their state of mind and whether some of them were at risk.
