An action by a young Gaelic footballer who claimed a knee injury he sustained at the age of 10 was initially misdiagnosed has been settled at the High Court with no admission of liability.
Anthony McHugh (20), The Valley, Tuam, Co Galway, had sued consultant orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Michael O’Sullivan, care of Merlin Park Hospital, Galway, over allegedly misdiagnosing the nature of a right knee injury he suffered in July 2001.
The claims were denied. Dr O’Sullivan, while accepting Mr McHugh sustained a knee injury, denied negligence, breach of duty or that the level of care provided fell below the accepted standard.
Yesterday, Ms Justice Mary Irvine was informed the action had been settled and could be struck out. No details of the settlement were revealed.
