Remember Sandy, the beautiful but abandoned golden retriever featured in last week's Southern Report? The Animals' Home in Cork had been complaining about lack of funding and the craze at Christmas time of giving animals as presents to children who abandon them later.

Well, it is a pleasure to report that Sandy has been adopted by a family in Monkstown, Cork, and she has settled in, not finding it the least bit difficult to come to terms with her new environment. In this case, all's well that ends well.

Writing about the abandonment of animals after Christmas, it struck me that people can be cruel, but they can be kind too.

There was a huge reaction to the plight of animals. From all over the State, people made contact to find out more about the Animals' Home in Cork, wanting to make cash donations. Sandy's attractive face and sad eyes touched a nerve.

Mr Alan Tuohy, who manages the home, contacted The Irish Times to say his telephone never stopped ringing the day Sandy's photograph appeared. He believes only good will come out it. Hopefully, that will be the case.

The address of the Animals' Home is Clontarf Street, Cork.
