These days the most decadent events come complete with exclamation marks and Restoration Revelry 2000! should be no exception.

It is, according to the organisers, the "most mindblowing millennium bash" imaginable and will be held on New Year's Eve at Castle Leslie, Glaslough, Co Monaghan. Proceeds go toward restoring the castle's damaged Long Gallery and Library Wing. And tickets are a snip at £985.

Sammy Leslie, whose family have lived at Castle Leslie for 300 years will host the party with her husband. "All the repairs will cost around half a million pounds but we are hoping to raise around £50,000 from the event," she said.

Past guests at the castle include the King and Queen of Sweden, the Churchills and Mick Jagger.

The event was launched last night at the Hibernian United Service Club on St Stephen's Green in Dublin. In typically ebullient form, Senator David Norris spoke at the launch about the "extraordinary house" that this "extraordinary family" live in. "Houses like these are just husks without the family there," he said.
