CONCERN is growing for large shoals of salmon trapped in the Moy river at Ballina, Co Mayo. It is estimated that up to 7,000 fish are being held back in the tidal section of the river.
Mr Vincent Roche, manager of the North Western Regional Fisheries Board, said that a close watch was being kept on the stocks. While high temperatures had resulted in a decline in the water level, there was no immediate danger to the fish from lack of oxygen.
The salmon are unable to get to the upper reaches of the river because of insufficient water at the falls.
