More than 500 people raised over €400,000 for charity this weekend by climbing the four highest mountains in each province in just 36 hours.

And the ninth annual four peaks challenge, run by housing and homeless agency focus Ireland, is to be staged again in September due to popular demand.

The mountains scaled at the weekend were Carrauntoohil in Co Kerry, Mweelrea in Co Mayo, Co Down's Slieve Donard and Lugnaquilla in Co Wicklow.

The next Four Peaks Challenge takes place on September 12-14th.

Each of the 80 teams raised a minimum of €4,500 in sponsorship. The event is now one of focus Ireland's flagship fundraising events - it raised more than €380,000 last year.

Fundraising director Mark Mellett said: "we had such a great demand for the event this year that we are now holding the four peaks twice in the one year for the first time ever. The extra money raised will really help this year as the funding situation is getting tighter all the time".

The funds will help focus Ireland deliver on its five-year strategy to provide 800 new homes by 2010 in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Waterford and Sligo.

"we also provide a range of vital support and preventative services to help ensure everyone has a right to a place called home," added Mr Mellett.

This year a record total of 80 teams signed up for the Four Peaks Challenge from companies, clubs and groups of friends.
