More than 500,000 people are expected to take public transport into the capital today for the traditional annual December 8th Christmas shopping extravaganza.
Dublin City Business Association (DCBA) said the improvement in public transport services in recent years - including increased Fast Bus Corridors, expanded Irish Rail timetables and the introduction of the Luas - meant that more people than ever were leaving the car at home.
Trade is expected to be steady for the city's 4,000 retailers, 10 department stores and shopping centres.
Around 140 DARTs, 90 Commuter trains and 100 Intercity trains will bring customers to and from Dublin. Irish Rail will have additional services from Carlow and Galway to the capital and the company anticipates a 25 per cent increase in passengers on Intercity routes over 2006 figures.
"The demand for regular and reliable public transport services is there among the public," said DCBA chief executive Tom Coffey.
"Where this service is available, public transport is often the more advisable option to choose from a convenience and environmental perspective," he said.
