The VHI last night celebrated its 40th anniversary at the Royal Hospital, Kilmainham. The Minister for Health, Mr Noonan, was guest of honour, and the Minister responsible for establishing the organisation in 1957, Mr Tom O'Higgins, also attended.
The VHI chairman, Mr Noel Hanlon, said since its establishment, the VHI had continued to support the retention of community rating. The company believed health insurance costs should not accelerate for people as they grow older.
