Johannesburg - Three men were charged in a Durban court yesterday with 13 counts of murder after Friday's deadly tear-gas attack in a disco packed with young people, police said.
About 600 youngsters aged between 11 and 16 were partying at the Throb night-club in the mainly Indian suburb of Chatsworth outside Durban on Friday afternoon when someone set off a tear-gas canister, police said. The teenagers panicked and rushed for the main exit as gas filled the club. A wall collapsed, and five boys and six girls died in the stampede.
Another young person was declared dead on arrival at hospital, and a 12-year-old boy died in hospital on Sunday. More than 100 youths were seriously injured.
