A Mayo pensioner who sprayed a plastic container of petrol over former District Court Judge Patrick Brennan at a sitting of Newport Court two years ago, when he appeared on charges of driving, a hearse with no tax and insurance, has been fined £3,000 at, Castlebar Circuit Court.

The case of Mr Peadar Kilroy (75), of Meddlicott Street, Newport, had been adjourned for 12 months pending his good behaviour.

On the recommendation of Judge Patrick Brennan and the late Circuit Court Judge John Cassidy, Judge Harvey Kenny said that he would not impose a prison sentence on Mr Kilroy, but stated that he had committed a very serious offence.

He ordered the £3,000 fine to be given to the Widows and Orphans of the Garda Siochana Fund and the District Court Benevolent Fund.
