An air crash in Luanda in which at least 28 people died yesterday was the latest in a series of fatal accidents or incidents involving aircraft in Angola in recent years.

Of the 28 who died yesterday eight were on board the Antonov-12 and 20 on the ground. The aircraft crashed in the Cazenga suburb of the Angolan capital.

Previous incidents include:

1995 - June 18th: A chartered aircraft carrying a football team crashes near Benguela, killing 48 people. December 18th: A Zairean aircraft crashes on take-off at Jamba airport in the south-east, killing 141.

1996 - June 25th: An Antonov-26 crashes near Kafunfu, in the north-east, killing eight.

1997 - March 12th: A privately owned Antonov-12 crashes at Lukapa, in northern Angola, killing 16, including four Russian crew-members.

1998 - August 28th: An Antonov-26 with 20 passengers, including troops, is shot down by Unita rebels while on a flight between Kafunto and Malanje, in northern Angola.

September 20th: Ten people die when an Antonov-12 heading for the diamond trading centre of Lukapa goes down 60 km from the capital.

October 26th: An Antonov with about 40 people on board flying to Luanda from Nzaje, in the north-east, is listed as missing.

December 26th: A Hercules C-130 chartered by a UN observer mission crashes in the centre of the country, killing all 14 on board, including 10 UN officials. Luanda accuses the rebels of shooting the aircraft down.

December 27th: An Antonov-12 carrying 10 people to Lukapa is listed as missing.

1999 - January 2nd: A UN-chartered Hercules C-130 crashes at Chinguli, in the centre of the country. The bodies of the nine people on board, comprising five UN officials and four crew members, are found in a common grave near the scene of the accident. Luanda and the rebels accuse each other of responsibility.
