A major electronics firm had already decided the fate of its general manager before entering sham redundancy talks with him, a judge has decided.

Jerome Ponisi (64), Roselawn, Naas, Co Kildare, who was unfairly dismissed from his job with JVC Europe two years ago, has been awarded record compensation of €214,000 in the Circuit Civil Court.

Judge Jacqueline Linnane told Matthew Jolley, counsel for Mr Ponisi, that there was no question of a genuine redundancy from his €149,000-a-year job.

Increasing an Employment Appeals Tribunal award of €161,400 by more than €53,000, Judge Linnane said the company had already decided Mr Ponisi’s fate before entering the sham consultation process.
