DUBLIN:MEMBERS AND supporters of the Palestinian community in Ireland gathered in Dublin yesterday to object to violence and show solidarity with the people of the territory.
About 100 Palestinians and two Israeli soldiers have been killed in four days of violence in the region, which prompted UN secretary general Ban Ki-Moon to condemn Israel for using excessive force.
About 200 demonstrators met at the GPO on O'Connell Street to voice their discontent regarding recent events in the territory. The peaceful protesters said it was essential that people spoke out internationally before the Israeli military moved into Gaza.
Ihab Ijawi, a member of the Irish Palestinian community, said he was grateful to the Irish public for their support.
"The history of Ireland shows that the people here really know what occupation means and I would like to thank them for supporting our protest."
Meanwhile, the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign has also condemned the violence in the region and has called on Irish political leaders to take action on the issue by saying "enough is enough".
The chairwoman of the solidarity campaign, Marie Crawley, said: "We call on the Irish Government to condemn what is happening in Gaza in the strongest possible terms and to break with the criminal negligence of EU foreign policy."
