One in five students secured an upgrade of their original Leaving Cert grades after a recheck, according to figures published by the State Examinations Commission (SEC) last night.
There was a particularly high percentage of successful appeals in several higher level subjects, including biology (where 31 per cent of students were upgraded), geography (27 per cent), history (27 per cent) and accounting (26 per cent).
In higher level English 12 per cent of those making an appeal were successful.
In ordinary level maths – the exam taken by the highest number of candidates (over 37,000) – 17 per cent of those who made an appeal were successful.
