Up to 20,000 people are expected to consume 100,000 oysters in the south Galway village of Clarenbridge this weekend during the 51st annual Clarenbridge Oyster Festival.
Much has changed since a mere 34 people attended the first festival in 1954, but the event, which is worth an estimated €4 million to the economy of the village, retains its Galway roots while attracting visitors from all around the world.
The week-long programme includes a market day, golf tournaments, yacht races, art and photographic exhibitions, a fine wine and gourmet evening, talks and lectures.
The festival marquee at Paddy Burke's pub hosts a big band night tonight with entertainment provided by All Star Jazz, the Drifters and Macnas.
However, the traditional highlight is the Saturday gala celebration which kicks off in the marquee at 1pm with entertainment by the Garda Band, The Jive Aces and Pyramid.
