A Catholic man has been awarded £19,500 in a settlement against Queen's University and a Protestant woman has accepted £8,000 in her claim of religious discrimination by her former employer. Both cases were supported by the Fair Employment Commission.

The man alleged he was discriminated against when he was not short listed for the post of director of the Institute of Criminology. Queen's university denied the discrimination but accepted that the operation of selection and appointment procedures had fallen short of the guidance set out in the fair employment code of practice.

In the second case, the woman complained of religious discrimination when her former employer, Irish World Ltd, failed to appoint her to the post of family history officer. The woman alleged that she was better qualified and had more relevant experience for the post than the successful Catholic appointee.

The company admitted the discrimination.
