Sixteen people were killed and 30 injured in a bus explosion in the central Chinese city of Wuhan on Saturday, writes Conor O'Clery in Beijing. The bombing appears to be one of the most serious acts of sabotage against the Chinese government in recent times.
The bus was ripped apart on the approaches to a main bridge across the Yangtze river, the Guangzhou Daily said yesterday. The newspaper said police believed the explosion was caused by "lawless elements". A year ago, nine people were killed and 74 injured when three bus bombings occurred in Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang, coinciding with funeral rites for the former Chinese paramount leader, Deng Xiaoping, in Beijing. The authorities are also still investigating a bomb blast that injured 10 people on a bus in Beijing last March.
