Another 14 dental patients who were recalled for blood tests this week by the Health Service Executive have tested negative for HIV.

The patients are part of a cohort of 66 individuals, mainly children, who are being recalled for blood tests after a dentist who treated them tested positive for the virus.

The recall began last week and at the weekend 31 of the 66 patients had been tested and all were negative for the virus.

The results of blood tests on the 14 who underwent screening on Monday were returned yesterday and last evening a HSE spokeswoman confirmed these were also negative.

A small number of others are due to be tested later this week, while some more have either put off testing until next month or refused to take part in the recall, believing it to be unnecessary.

The HSE's Dr Brian O'Herlihy has said he does not expect any of the 66, who are all in the Dublin region, to have been infected and that the recall is purely precautionary.

The dentist was diagnosed with HIV last October. It was not until last week that the HSE began the recall.
