Police have arrested a dozen anti-nuclear protesters in Germany.

Four protesters chained themselves to treetops above a railway line where a German nuclear waste shipment was scheduled to travel.

They were hoping to block a shipment of atomic waste that is being returned from France, where it was treated at a reprocessing plant, to a waste site in Gorleben, 100 miles northwest of Hanover.

Dozens of protesters marched to the French border, where the train loaded with six containers of waste was expected to cross.

Authorities were keen to prevent a repeat of protests that disrupted the previous waste transport to Gorleben in March. Environmentalists had delayed it for 16 hours by chaining themselves to the tracks.

The train started its 375-mile journey from a reprocessing plant in La Hague last night.
