ELEVEN more loyalist marches are due to pass along the Ormeau Road in Belfast by the end of August, a magistrate was told yesterday when he was urged to declare the area "out of bounds".
A prosecuting lawyer made the request at Belfast Magistrates Court as seven men appeared on charges arising out of disturbances on Monday after the RUC enforced a parade ban and stopped Apprentice Boys from marching through the nationalist lower Ormeau area.
The lawyer asked the magistrate to make it a condition of bail that the defendants must stay out of the Ormeau area. "Given the events of yesterday and the prospect of more marches the same potential for disorder exists in the future," he said.
Mr William Elliott (23), from Annadale Grove, Belfast, Mr Ian Penman (23), from Chaine Walk, Antrim, Mr Peter Logan, also 23, from Glen view Crescent, Castleregh, Belfast, and Mr Robert Anderson (41), of Kirk Park, Dundonald, east Belfast, who were accused of riotous behaviour, were released on bail along with Mr David Anderson (26), from Glenmore Park, Lisburn who was charged with disorderly behaviour.
They were all freed on their own bail of £250 each, ordered to report to the RUC once a week and stay out of the Ormeau area.
Mr Gary Crooks (23), from Ballygomartin Road, Belfast, was remanded in custody on charges of throwing a petrol bomb and riotous behaviour. Mr Glen Cullen (29), of no fixed address, was remanded in custody on a charge of disorderly behaviour to enable police to cheek out an address he gave in court.
