A stampede at a packed match between two of Ghana's leading teams killed at least 100 people tonight, according to hospital officials.

Accra's Hearts of Oak were leading Assante Kotoko 2-1 with five minutes left in the game when Assante supporters began throwing bottles and chairs onto the field, witnesses said.

Police then fired tear gas, creating panic in the stands as spectators rushed to escape the gas.

The injured were rushed to surrounding hospitals, where officials said on condition of anonymity that at least 100 people had been killed and many more injured.
