More than £10,000 was stolen in Cork yesterday in two separate bank raids on different branches of Allied Irish Banks, Dick Hogan reports.

The first occurred at 10.20 a.m. at the branch in Ballintemple when two raiders, wearing balaclavas and armed with hammers, burst into the bank, threatened staff and demanded money. They have not been caught.

In the second raid, the AIB branch at Bridge Street in Cork was held up by two men, also wearing balaclavas and wielding knives, who got away with an estimated £5,000. The two men ran towards the city centre and boarded a bus. One was arrested almost immediately and later his accomplice was also taken into custody. Both men were detained for questioning.
