All aboard for Legoland

We are planning a three- to four-night holiday to Legoland Denmark with our three girls. We would like to add on an extra week. Can you recommend somewhere reasonable close by, with good facilities for children and preferably self catering?

Getting to Denmark from Dublin is comfortable with full-service Scandinavian Airlines, via Copenhagen. You have a choice of either flying to Copenhagen and renting a car or taking public transport to Billund where Legoland is located. All prices are based on taking holidays in July.

There is a good difference in fares. Sale fare to Copenhagen would be around €600, and if you flew all the way to Billund, it would be around €1,200, flysas.ie.

Legoland is a three-hour drive from Copenhagen Airport. You can stay in the Legoland Hotel on site or in hotels, hostels or self-catering in and around Billund. You would be looking at prices from €220 per night upwards including tickets.

The area of Djursland is around 100km from Legoland, on the coast and a lovely place for a family holiday. There are zoos, an aquarium, wildlife and theme parks, as well as great beaches, visitdjursland.com.

Lanzarote for families

We are a family with two boys ages 11 and 13 and would like to try Lanzarote at Easter. This will be our first trip to this island. Do you know of any holidays that give an opportunity to surf? If not, are there any venues with plenty of swimming, but no busy night life?

AMC, Derry

Lanzarote is good for family holidays with plenty of sun, sand and sea, restaurants and facilities for everyone. The children will be delighted to see Timanfaya, the volcano, and a chance to ride camels.

Easter in Lanzarote is already looking very busy from Northern Ireland. There are very few package holidays available. Thomson Holidays and Thomas Cook are only showing availability for either before Easter, March 29th–30th and after, April 20th onwards, not ideal for school. Check with your local travel agent, they may have some availability. From Dublin there is availability during the holidays, see holidaysonline.iefor a selection.

Aer Lingus has flights from Belfast to Lanzarote and midweek prices around Easter are better value, around £200pps (€240). You can book an apartment in a complex on booking.com, and prices are from €300-€700 per week for places with swimming pools and beach access.

Lanzarote has surfing all year round, mainly on the north and west coasts, La Garita and Famara beaches are good for beginners. There is a surf school in Costa Teguise, volcanosurflanzarote.comand they have class for all ages.

Costa Teguise, Matagorda and Playa Blanca are quieter family resorts with a huge variety of accommodation.
