The Newmarket Brocante takes its name from the French word for flea market and its location on Newmarket Square, near Thomas Street, Dublin 8.

The idea to set up a vintage furniture and furnishings fair came from Pat Cooke, a French polisher, framer Ross Souter Johnson, and carpenter Thomas Morley. The next one takes place tomorrow, from 11am to 5pm, and is worth noting if you’ve a taste for things that are proud to show their age. Prices are moderate and it is a good hunting ground for those who want old pieces with character but not the price tags of fine antiques from 1950s lighting and framed movie posters to odd collectables and French linen.

Newcomers Paul and Min Drum offer old furniture they source in France. They have beautiful small pieces such as curvy chairs and neat side tables that are not over restored. There’s also a cafe on site and face-painting to keep children happy. The Brocante Market, The Co-op, Newmarket Square Dublin 8, tel: 087-0925033, thebrocantemarket.com
