VW revives Golf Estate for Irish market

Volkswagen is to offer a third variant of the Golf later this year when the Golf Estate will join the hatchback and new SV model. It marks a return to the Irish market of the Golf Estate, which VW stopped selling here in 2004. However, due to the increasing popularity of estate cars in the compact segment in Ireland, VW reckons there is a market for it now.

“More buyers are looking for a compact car with added versatility and practicality, and the Golf Estate offers just that,” said Paul Burke, operations director of Volkswagen Passenger Cars. “The Golf is Ireland’s best-selling car and this offers buyers even greater choice.”

With a 605-litre cargo capacity, which can expand to 1,620 litres with the seats folded flat, the Golf Estate offers very generous load-carrying capacity. Like the Golf hatchback, the Estate is based on the MQB platform, so both have the same wheelbase. Irish buyers can expect a similar engine line-up to that found in the hatchback, with the bulk of sales expected to come from the 1.6-litre 110bhp diesel engine.

Full pricing and specification have yet to be announced but the model is expected to have a starting price of under €23,000.
