Bentley goes greenSome would have baulked at the speech given by Bentley boss Dr Franz-Josef Paefgen in Geneva, focusing as it did on green issues. Bentley is not a name usually associated with protecting the environment, but in today's market, the luxury carmakers are in a potentially perilous position when it comes to punitive taxation on emissions of CO2.

To that end, Bentley claims that its entire range will become capable of emitting less than 120g/km of carbon dioxide by 2012. That's only four years away and to put the challenge into perspective, the latest Continental GT Speed emits 396g/km. Look a little closer at Bentley's claim and you'll note that it relates to "well-to-wheel" emissions. However, it's not just a case of using renewable fuels, as Bentley says a new powertrain alone will deliver a 40 per cent reduction in consumption without any loss in performance. No other details were given, but it is assumed that a hybrid system will be employed.

BMW enhancements

BMW has unveiled a range of Performance enhancements for the 1-Series and 3-Series range which will allow customers to modify their cars with a range of "performance accessory" packages, which comprises engine, suspension, brake, body and interior upgrades. At the Geneva show yesterday they were displayed on the 1-Series, but a similar set of options will be available from the 3-Series too. Not only is there a range of visual accessories to make the car look more aggressive, but the mechanical upgrades include a carbon-fibre air-intake system, BMW Performance exhaust, a sports braking package, a short-shift gear lever and BMW Performance suspension, which not only lowers the car's ride height but also features recalibrated shock absorbers and coil springs. BMW Performance will be available from BMW dealers from April and will carry a comprehensive warranty.

Mini models get a JCW makeover

It's unusual for Mini to reveal two new models at once, but in reality there is little to separate the new John Cooper Works Clubman and Hatch models other than the body style. More significantly, these cars are now produced in-house by Mini, following the takeover of the JCW brand from John Cooper Garages. Both high-performance models share a 208bhp version of the four-cylinder turbocharged unit developed in association with the PSA Group. So equipped, the hatch now reaches 100km/h in just 6.5 seconds. The changes extend much further than the engine though, and include substantial chassis and styling enhancements.
