My Bike and I

What was your first machine and how much did it cost? Technically it was my sister's bike, but it was a Honda Novio step-through moped which cost £40 used. Riding it was a challenge to both dignity and effort as it had to be pedalled to help the mighty 49cc engine. . .

What attracted you to motorbikes? As a hormonal teenager in the 1970s nothing was more alluring than the sight of a yellow Garelli Tiger. Apart from perhaps Gaye Advert from The Adverts. The attraction couldn't be logically explained then, but now it boils down to speed and practicality for commuting.

Is there any biking heritage in your family? My father had various motorcycles, but he continues to try and put me off riding a bike.

What is your current machine and what did it cost? I have a BMW F650GS which cost the equivalent of €5,000 as a two-year-old bike. I also have a 1967 Lambretta SX150 and a 1972 Vespa 90 Racer. I am hoping to acquire another 1970s Vespa this winter.

What do you use your bikes for? I use the BMW on most days for commuting the 30-mile round trip from home in Ratoath to The Helix.

What attracted you to this particular bike? The BMW is a brilliant bike: Simple, well made, agile and enough poke for me at least. I think this latest version is great looking too.

What got you started in restoration? I had a late 1970s Vespa PX a few years ago but had never satisfied my urge for a Lambretta which had been latent since my teens. I couldn't afford a restored scooter so I bought an Italian import and a workshop manual.

Were you unnerved by your initial lack of knowledge? A little, but I found stripping the bike down fairly straightforward and I didn't seem to have any wheels or other bits left over once I put it back together. I did get the engine professionally rebuilt, though, which was a bit of a cheat.

What advice would you give to those thinking about restoring an old bike but who may not have the knowledge/confidence yet? Look online for advice and meet up with local enthusiasts - they will be pleased to help and share knowledge. Get the right tools, retire to a swearing-friendly environment and off you go.

Do you see biking as more than a means of transport? Yes. When I arrived in Dublin about a year ago I was away from my family and knew no-one outside work. Within a few weeks I hooked up with the Missing Link Scooter Club and picked up a ready-made set of new mates who made me feel very welcome in Dublin.
